The truth about creating a successful online business is that it’s not nearly as hard as you think it is.
There are a zillion online marketing gurus out there selling you all kinds of complicated solutions and offering “essential” (but often contradictory) advice.
Finding your zone of genius is all about focusing on the thing that you do well and spending more of your time there.
Your zone of genius is that thing that you do the BEST.
It’s where your passion, interests and skill set come together in perfect harmony.
If you’re a designer, that might mean creating new logos.
If you’re a writer, that might mean cranking out new and exciting content.
If you’re a photographer, that might mean filling your Instagram up with beautiful new images.
Whatever it is for you, the more you put it out there, the more you will become known for it.
Maybe you’re not getting paid for your Instagram photos or writing submissions at first but the more you create the bigger your online profile will get.
And that’s how your people will find you.
The concept comes from the (amazing) book The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks. (This is a pretty life-changing book TBH so I highly recommend picking it up!)
The more time you can spend in your zone of genius the better off your business will be.
And figuring out your zone of genius is one way of getting there.
It’s when you’ve got the ball and you know exactly what to do with it.
Besides, what’s the point of creating your own business if it doesn’t fulfill you?
Honing in on your unique talents is the only thing that will set you apart in this world.
It’s the work that you do that makes you think “I got this”.
It’s what you feel the most proud of.
It’s what gets you so involved that when you look up you’ve totally lost track of time.
How To Find Your Zone Of Genius
Your zone of genius is all about ease and flow and helping people by doing EXACTLY what you’re the very best at.
If you’re not yet sure what that is, ask yourself these questions:
- What do you love to do the most? What activities make you feel the most capable?
- What do people ask you for help with? (Personally and professionally)
And if that doesn’t help you try looking at it from the other end:
- What tasks bore you to tears?
- What would you prefer to never do again if you had the chance?
Sometimes thinking about what doesn’t work for you is the best way to find out what does! (So don’t sweat it if zooming in your genius takes a little time!)
It’s worth putting in the work to figure out! Finding your zone of genius will ultimately give your business superpowers in these three areas:
3 Reasons Why You Need To Find Your Zone Of Genius
You are here to make a HUGE fucking difference in this world. And someone out there really NEEDS that unique thing that you do.
So the more time you can spend in your zone of genius, the more you’ll support those people and the more those people will support you (by happily paying you).
It’s so easy to look around at what everyone else is doing and start thinking you should follow in their footsteps. But it doesn’t really matter what anyone else does! Finding your zone of genius all about figuring out what YOU do best. And when you’ve got that figured out, there will be literally NO competition because there’s truly only one you.
The faster you can figure out how to do that, the sooner your business will start making bank.
2. Time Management
As much as I’m an advocate of the DIY approach, there will also come a time when it’s no longer practical for you to do EVERYTHING for your online business. Concentrating on your zone of genius (ie. coaching, writing or designing) also means spending time doing that thing that you need to do in order to help your clients and less time doing all the other things involved (accounting, sending newsletters, booking appointments or whatever).
Ultimately, concentrating on creating your best work will make you better at time management and an overall badass boss babe.
3. Hiring Decisions
Even small solopreneur businesses will eventually blossom into needing employees! So when you make your hiring decisions, you want to look for people that are brilliant at filling in YOUR weak spots.
Recognizing your zone of genius will also highlight what you’re NOT good at. Not everyone is a natural-born accountant or social media manager! But someone out there will be more than thrilled to get paid for doing the work that you don’t want to.
Just remember, it’s always better to find a rockstar for each particular category than trying to find one person to fill in everything. When you hire other people for THEIR zone of genius, you’ve got a winning business formula.
I hope this post gives you some food for thought on how to find your own zone of genius!
